Sekhukhune Muni surprised over residents lack of water claims

The Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) expressed surprise over claims from Leeuwfontein residents outside Marble Hall in the Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality, over a continued lack of access to proper running water.

LIMPOPO – The district municipality said it was ‘extremely surprised by allegations’.According to Willy Mosoma, SDM Spokesperson, they were supplying Leeuwfontein residents with water seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

“Of course, we acknowledge that we had a pump breakdown in June at the package plant. However, that was since repaired and residents are getting water.”

Mosoma added that it was important to note that even during the June breakdown of a pump at the package plant, residents received water from the Flag Boshielo Dam dedicated line to their area.

Mosoma said currently, the package plant dedicated to residents of Leeuwfontein was fully operational. “We are dismissing allegations that residents are without water.”

Earlier, residents in the area complained that they had gone without water from their taps for weeks, a situation that forced them to fetch water from streams or buy water from those who had boreholes.

Kgobise Setlamorago, a resident, said they were worried that the district municipality was taking their concerns over a lack of water in the area for granted.

Setlamorago said the problem of water supply in the area continued to disadvantage residents who were forced to buy water from those with boreholes because their taps went dry for weeks.

“We see people fetching water from the streams every day,” he said.

Martha Mokoeana, a pensioner, said they were forced to use pension grants to buy water because they had none as the supply took weeks and sometimes more than a month.
