Stop sign erected at the Percy Fyfe T-junction on the Matlala Road

POLOKWANE – A new stop sign was erected at the T-junction going to Percy Fyfe on the Matlala road.

Residents travelling the road daily have long since asked that a traffic light be erected at the junction, as motorists wanting to go to town entering from the Percy Fyfe road, struggled to get into traffic at peak times in the morning. The road falls under Sanral, according to a source among the road workers, and the stop signs were erected by the Department of Public Works.

Immediately after the stop sign was put up, people on social media groups complained that motorists were not adhering to the signs and that traffic police should be present for a while at least, to regulate traffic.

A team from the department was dispatched to take down the stop signs and to at first build three buzz lines and a speed bump on each side of the stop signs, to slow down traffic approaching the stop signs. The stop signs would be installed again when the roadworks were finished.

A motorist travelling the road every weekday said the stop will assist those driving to the city from Percy Fyfe and the Leeuwkuil smallholdings – if motorists on the Matlala road obey the stop sign. She said it would, however, not keep taxis and other vehicles travelling alongside the road, forming another traffic lane when in a hurry to get to the city.

“We are grateful for the stops,” she said, “even though motorists are still speeding over the buzz lines. Maybe the speed bumps, when finished, will deter them from speeding.”
