Kgaugelo’s love for food extends beyond the kitchen

Kgaugelo 'The Cookist' Meso is known on social media for her mouthwatering homemade dishes that will tickle anyone's taste-buds.

POLOKWANE – With a deep-rooted love for food and describing herself as a ‘cuisiner’ at heart, Kgaugelo ‘The Cookist’ Meso is slowly making a name for herself as the go-to for a scrumptious meal.

Born and bred in Mankweng, the 30-year-old says she hated cooking growing up, causing her to fight with her Mom because she didn’t want to learn how to cook. “My interest in cooking began in 2004 when I took hotel-keeping and catering as a major subject at school. I automatically became a ‘cuisiner’ at heart,” she said.

On referring to herself as ‘The Cookist’, Kgaugelo says she wanted to be different. “I prefer this name because I did not finish the cuisine course, hence I call myself a cuisiner and not a chef. I’m a cook at heart,” she added. As time passed by, Kgaugelo realised how people enjoyed her food and took action in July when she turned her passion for cooking and preparing food into a business.

“Someone very dear to my heart pushed me to start my business. He told me my face lights up when I’m in the kitchen,” she said with a smile.

With sandwiches, salads, mogodu, lamb shank, oxtail, dombolo and eggs benedict on her menu, Kgaugelo’s signature dish is Amarula chicken wings and potato salad, which keeps her customers coming back for more.

Kgaugelo prepares all her meals from home and sells them by order. For now, she works on a weekly basis by orders and bookings. She sets her menu on Mondays and her customers place orders by Wednesdays. Kgaugelo already has bookings for August and September and she’s excited that people trust her enough just by looking at her photos.

“Advice for aspiring cooks/chefs/cuisiners; do it because you love it, you also have to love and enjoy eating tasty food. Everybody cooks these days, so be unique and have faith in your hands. When it comes to the love of food, I just don’t know to explain it myself, the love runs deep in my heart. I treasure every minute I spend cooking, whether I’m making a smoothie or chips. My heart resides in my pots,” she concluded.
