Limpopo police constable (30) shot by hijackers, later dies in hospital

30-year-old Tubaste police constable, Alfred Mathabatha who was stationed at Tubatse Police Station succumbed to his injuries on Sunday evening

LIMPOPO – The 30-year-old constable was shot and wounded after he responded to a hijacking situation along the Majaditshukudu and Ohrigstad Roads on 13 June.

In a statement released, the spokesperson for National Police Commissioner,  Colonel Brenda Muridili said it alleged the 30-year-old constable was shot and seriously wounded after he responded to a hijacking situation along the Majaditshukudu and Ohrigstad Roads on 13 June.

“On 13 June 2019, 30-year-old Constable Alfred Mathabatha and his colleagues were on duty when they responded to a hijacking in progress. When they spotted the suspects, a chase ensued and the suspects started firing shots at the police. Constable Mathabatha was subsequently injured and taken to hospital where he succumbed to his wounds on Sunday, 16 June 2019.”

Commissioner General Khehla John Sitole and the Management of the SAPS have since conveyed their condolences to the family of murdered Tubatse Police Officer and further has directed the province to afford the family of the deceased the necessary support through their time of bereavement and beyond. “It is always a sad day to learn of the passing of yet another police officer at the hands of ruthless criminals. And I still say that we will not rest until we arrest and bring to book all those that continue to attack the State, no matter how long it takes for the wheels of justice to turn, police killers will pay the price for their gruesome crimes”, said General Sitole.

The province has already mobilised the necessary resources to hunt down the perpetrators as per the 72-Hour Activation Plan and arrests are expected to be made, Muridili concluded.
