POLOKWANE – Water shortages are expected in most parts of the municipality, due to repairs at Ebenezer Dam and Dap Naude Dam supply line, a statement by the municipality read.
Municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala says the municipality had received two reports regarding water supply disruptions from two sources.
“The first report received was from Lepelle Northern Water which stated that divers from the Department of Water and Sanitation will be commencing with emergency removal of malfunctioning hydraulic cylinders from the Ebenezer Dam from tomorrow morning, 17 May. This means four to five hours of pumping water to Polokwane will be lost daily until the work is finished. It is not yet clear when this process will be finished,” he explained.
This report comes three weeks after the municipality stated the same reason, that the city would be having five-hour water supply interruptions daily for two to three weeks in order for the Department of Water and Sanitation can dredge to unblock valves within the Ebenezer Dam.

Selala said the second report received was regarding accidental damage on the main supply line from Dap Naude Dam. The damage was caused by excavation by a local farming company, a kilometer away from the dam.
“The company is working together with the municipality. The extent of the damage is being conducted and an update will be provided once a report is received. This will result in the Dalmada Water Treatment Works being out of operation while the line is being fixed resulting in shortages in most areas. The municipality will deploy water tankers in affected areas and areas receiving water are urged to use water sparingly,” Selala’s statement concluded.
