[UPDATE] Police divers recover bodies of siblings presumed to have drowned at mine outside Mokopane

It is alleged the two young girls were collecting water when they fell into the water

MOKOPANE – The bodies of the two young girls who drowned while allegedly collecting water at a pit hole at a soil mine at Matebeleng village next to Weenen Bricks, have been recovered.

The siblings allegedly fell into the water at around 14:00 on Wednesday and according to a statement issued by Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the bodies of the siblings were retrieved from the pit hole at around 12:00 today (Thursday, 2 May).

“The Police received information on Wednesday at about 14:30, that two siblings drowned in a pit hole while allegedly fetching water. They immediately rushed to the scene led by the SAPS Search and Rescue team who resumed with the search. The frantic search continued until this morning at about 12:00 midday when the bodies were retrieved.”

In an earlier report Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Madimetja Chokoe, said it is alleged the two victims together with three other girls, were collecting water when the incident occurred. The two girls, aged 10 and 17, fell into the water and the other three girls ran home to get help, she said.

Ngoepe added that it is not yet clear how the two girls fell into the hole but ongoing police investigations will tell. The two sisters have been identified as Morongwa Seloane (10) and Mahlako Seloane (17).

“The postmortem will still be conducted to determine the exact cause of death,” he said.

Mogalakwena Municipality Mayor, Cllr Andrina Matsemala, accompanied by EXCO members, also visited the scene on Wednesday. “This is a very sad and painful situation,” Cllr Matsemala told Bosveld.

MOKOPANE – Police divers are still searching for the bodies of two young girls, presumed to have drowned, while collecting water at a soil mine at Matebeleng Village outside Mokopane at around 14:00 on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Madimetja Chokoe, said the two victims were allegedly part of a group of five girls who went to collect water from the dam. “Apparently the two girls, aged 10 and 17, fell into the water and the other three girls ran home to get help.”

Mogalakwena Municipality Mayor, Cllr Andrina Matsemala, accompanied by EXCO members, visited the scene on Wednesday. “This is a very sad and painful situation and as of yet there is not enough details about they incident to say more,” Cllr Matsemala told Bosveld.

Police divers are still on the scene searching for the bodies.
