N1 truck accident near Modimolle claims ten lives

The Kranskop and Mookgopong off-ramps, both directions, along the N1 have been temporarily closed for forensic investigation following an earlier collision between a truck and cross border combi.

LIMPOPO – Ten people were killed and two were injured when a truck and a cross border combi collided head on along the N1 near Kranskop on Thursday morning.

The accident which occurred on the N1’s high accident zone in Modimolle at Leeurantjies resulted in the road between Kranskop and Mookgophong being closed for several hours to allow the forensic pathologists to complete their work.

In a statement released, Spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Matome Taueatsoala says preliminary findings suggest that the accident happened after a speeding Toyota Combi lost control and collided head-on with a MAN Truck. 10 people died and two others were critically injured.

Traffic is still heavily back-up along the Northbound lanes but the N1 is now open to traffic.

LIMPOPO – Spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Matome Taueatsoala says the traffic is being diverted by traffic officials to R33 and R 101 to allow for forensic investigation. “We are in no position at this time to speak about the number of fatalities. As soon as the forensic pathologists are done with their work, the department will issue a full statement,” he said.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that seven people died in the collision.

Traffic is heavily back-up along the Northbound lanes. Motorists are urged to exercise patience and be cautious when approaching the scene.

Spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Matome Taueatsoala says the accident occurred on the N1’s high accident zone in Modimolle and that all northbound lanes are closed for now in order to clear the scene.

It is unclear whether there have been any fatalities. “Full information will follow at a later stage,” he said.

He added that in the interest of time, motorists traveling from Kranskop should off-ramp to Modimolle in order to use the R101 and those traveling from Mookgophong /Mokopane should also use the R101 to avoid delays.
