Police in Mecklenburg have arrested a man in his fifties on a negligent loss of firearm charge

LIMPOPO – A man in his fifties has been arrested following an incident of murder and attempted murder on Saturday night, 30 March, in Phahaskraal village.

In a statement released, police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe explains that a 39-year-old man and his 29-year-old friend were at a local liquor outlet when a 26-year-old man arrived.

“Without saying anything, the man shot both of them several times, killing the 39-year-old instantly and seriously injuring the 29-year-old man. The injured victim was immediately taken to the hospital for medical treatment. The suspect was later found dead at the same premises, with a bullet wound in his head and the firearm lying next to his body,” Ngoepe said.

The motive behind this incident is not clear at this stage but ongoing police investigations will tell.

Police were summoned and preliminary police investigations revealed that the firearm involved in the shooting, belongs to the suspect’s father and the father was apprehended. He will appear before the local magistrate court, soon.

Police have opened cases of murder, attempted murder an inquest docket was opened for further investigations.

“Communities, especially licensed firearm owners are warned to safeguard their firearms fully, in terms of the South African Firearm Control Act 60 of 2000. Those still found to be contravening this Act, will be dealt with mercilessly and without compromise,” Ngoepe concluded.
