Being a beauty queen is not all about the glitz and the glam

Taking part in a beauty pageant is not as easy as you think says 19-year-old Mitchell Dipela, semi- finalist for Miss Teenager South Africa 2019.

POLOKWANE -Mitchell originally from Moletji Leokaneng and currently residing in Southern Gateway in Limpopo has more than six beauty pageant competition titles under her belt. After having taken part in many modelling competitions and charity projects, Tlou tells Review about what it takes to be a successful and independent model.

“Being a part of a pageant/modelling competition is not easy, yes it has got all about glitz and glam on stage, but it’s not all about looking beautiful and pretty in front of a large audience. It takes dedication, hard work, passion, effort and also requires a lot of time and concentration,” Moletjie says.

She adds that in order to be recognised as a competent and professional finalist, you need to be involved in charity projects in and around your community. Charity work is not there only to impress the public and the judges, but to prove to yourself that you’re capable of helping others in need.

“Owning the Queen title does not mean you’re only doing it for yourself, yes you might be representing your city, province or country, but with all being said, it means you must do charity work to give back to the community shelters or unfortunate schools,” she says.

Tlou further explains that if a certain individual wins the Queen title but stay or come from an upper class area/community, they should look around or do some research about communities or schools that would need assistance in terms of basic needs; stationary, sanitary pads, school shoes/uniform, books etc for schools. “Or if one wants to donate in the community at some shelters, blankets, clothes, toys etc are usually needed at these homes,” she added.

She adds that even as a semi-finalist, models are required to do charity work in order to win the hearts of the community. “A model should know that when helping others it is not to impress everyone, but it is done as a need to help.”
