BREAKING NEWS: Muni to investigate its own after R2,4 million ‘account swap’

The Mogalakwena Municipality will today, in a special sitting, seek to commission a forensic investigation into its financial and information technology systems after more than R2,4 million was fraudulently paid into the wrong accounts.

MOKOPANE – After some of the municipality’s suppliers recently enquired about payment due to them, it was established that banking details had been changed during the payment process.

Malesela Selokela, the Head of Communications at the municipality, says in a statement that the Mayor, Andrina Matsemela, will today ask council to approve an investigation into what he termed “transactional fraud”.

He confirmed that the banking details of the intended recipients had been changed, resulting in R2, 416 544 million being paid into accounts other than those suppliers.

The transactions were reported to both banking institutions involved, and requests were made to them to have the accounts placed on hold in an effort to secure the funds in an attempt to recover some of the monies.

A fraud case was opened at the Mokopane Police station on 25 January.
