Well-known Limpopo boxer dies in freak accident

A well-known boxer, Balangani Ndou (35) of Nweli was killed while chopping down a tree at the Thohoyandou (Matatshe) Correctional Centre on Sunday.

LIMPOPO – The family has urged police to supply them with information on the incident.

On behalf of the family, Ndou’s sister, Lavhelesani Ndou said they were mourning the loss of her brother. She said little information has been forthcoming from the police in terms of what exactly happened, which caused her brother’s death.

“We learned of his death from the local traditional leader,” she said.

She said they could learn little by visiting the centre, and that, when they asked to see surveillance footage of the incident, they were insulted by a prison officer.

She confirmed that a post mortem would be conducted on her brother’s body, as confirmed by the police.

The Spokesperson for Correctional Services, Tshidi Mapole, stated that a thunderstorm had uprooted a tree on Sunday, which subsequently fell on three official vehicles. They immediately appointed a private company to cut down other trees that were growing next to the fence. Ndou was apparently hired by the private company and was killed while they were cutting down one of the trees.

Brig Motlafela Mojapelo of the SAPS confirmed that the police had opened an inquest after a tree had fallen on a man.

Boxing administrator Azwinndini Simba, said the boxing fraternity was shocked when they heard the news, and he sent their condolences to the family.
