Police call for awareness following the death of three people in separate drowning incidents

Limpopo police have advised communities to be cautious while at or crossing rivers or dams to prevent drownings from occurring

LIMPOPO – Police in Limpopo have cautioned communities about escalated incidents of drowning around the province following the death of three people who lost their lives in separate incidents.

In the Letsitele policing area outside Tzaneen, a 38-year-old man allegedly drowned while fishing with his friend on the Constantia farm on Wednesday evening, 23 January

“Police were informed about the incident and responded swiftly, the Saps Search and Rescue Team was immediately activated and worked tirelessly until the body was retrieved,” said police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

In the Mokwakwaila policing area outside Tzaneen, the body of a 24-year-old man was retrieved after he allegedly slipped into the Molototsi river on Saturday night, 26 January.

“The man was on his way home from a local liquor outlet,” Ngoepe explained.

In the final incident, the search and rescue team retrieved the body of a 33-year-old man from the Tshitomboni Village in the Thohoyandou policing area on Friday, 25 January.

“Police were summoned to the Luvuvhu River by the community, after a passerby noticed the body of a human being floating in the water,” he said.

Ngoepe concluded by advising communities to be cautious while at or crossing rivers or dams, especially during the rainy season.

“Let this be the responsibility of each and every citizen to share as much information about drowning as possible to prevent these types of incidents from occurring.”
