Cameron’s love for darts hits the bullseye every time

16-year-old darts enthusiast, Cameron van Dyk says he fell in love with darts the moment he was introduced to the sport by his father, last year.

POLOKWANE – “I have improved really well, all thanks to my father who signed me up to join the darts club in the city. From the get-go I have fallen absolutely in love with the sport ever since. This year, I will be representing the city and province at the SA Championships, for the second time since I started playing darts,” said the keen darts player.

Cameron says that it was his first time playing and winning that he realised his skill and talent for the sport.

“Winning at my first competition really inspired me to want to continue playing darts, as well take up challenges by participating in competitions. I have always watched my father play so he taught me the basics about the sport. Around March last year my parents went to Limpopo trials and asked me if I wanted to join the trials. I said yes, and I did well because I played against senior players. I barely ever play against anyone my age, and today I am in the top 10 for Limpopo against the seniors. After the first trials I started watching competitive darts on television and the number 1 darts player in the world, Michael van Gerwen, inspired me to go big in the darts,” he added.

Cameron says that after the first trials he played very hard and managed to make it into the SA team. He took 14th place in the singles and with his partner, they took fifth place in the doubles.

He says he dreams of growing to be as big a name in the darts community as Van Gerwen one day. “The sport is very beneficial to me because I enjoy it, it keeps my mind sharp, allows me to travel as well as bond with family and friends as most of my family members and friends play darts,” he concluded.
