Nailing the wood on life’s head is how Aubrey gets by

Aubrey Mofoleng (31) is crafting a life for himself and his family by doing not only what he loves, but what puts money in his pocket and food on his table, wood-work.

POLOKWANE – The wooden furniture maker from Ga-Makanye Village in Turfloop, has been in the wood craft business for almost two years now and only recently stared working from home making a range of furniture. He supports his fiance Tryphina Machethe and his four-year-old son Hlompho from the profit he makes.

While growing up, Aubrey loved to make things with his hands and after completing his matric at Ditlalemeso Secondary School in 2002, he decided to study mechanical engineering at Tshwane North College. Since graduating in 2005, he has not been able to find a job and had to look for a way to do something on the side to make sure that his family had ‘bread on the table’ every day while still looking for a occupation in what he initially studied for. That’s when he thought of doing what he loves, wood-work, and decided to turn it into a business.

“Before I worked part-time with a carpenter who taught me the finer tricks of the trade. Last year October, I decided to open my own business and have been making a successful living since,” he said.

Throughout his wood work career, Aubrey has worked on and made about 80 different furniture pieces such as benches, chairs, tables, cupboards, counters, kiddies chairs etc, just to mention a few.

Aubrey tells Review that he wants to help uplift his fellow youth and unemployed children by introducing them to the artistic concept of woodwork.

“I believe woodwork is my calling. I push myself to make new items every day and when I complete a set of furniture, I am motivated to push my skills even further,” Aubrey added.
