POLOKWANE – Sixty meters may not sound far, but if you are six-years-old and have to run the distance, it can be a dooming task.

Gr 1 learner at Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos, Phetolo Mokwena, matched a 27-year-old record by running 60m in 9.78 seconds during a P1 athletics meet at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Thursday, 24 January.

His mother, Thatohatsi, says he has been participating in athletics since Gr R. “He took part in the 60m and 80m sprints during the Super 12 competition where he came first in the 80m and second in the 60m.”

During the P1 athletics that took place on Thursday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, Phetolo once again ran the 60m and 80m sprints.

“I came second in the 80m and first in the 60m,” he told Review with a shy smile.

Thatohatsi says that after Phetolo won the race, the announcer mentioned that he had matched a 27-year-old record. “He finished the lap in 9,78 seconds and the announcer said that he matched the record set in 1992. I am really proud of him.”

Apart from athletics, Phetolo also plays rugby and admits that he likes rugby more.

Thatohatsi says that he is not yet part of an athletics club but she is looking into signing him up.
