Mahlogonolo Morapedi Selemela from Thakgalang, Nobody says he didn't want to sit at home and wait for a job to find him, so he created one for himself

POLOKWANE – Unemployment among the youth remains one of the most challenging problems, which often leads to depression according to Mahlogonolo Morapedi Selemela from Thakgalang, Nobody.

The 22-year-old says since he completed his qualification in National Chemical Engineering, he has struggled to land a job in the field and that pushed him to further his studies and improve on his qualifications and is currently studying towards a BTech qualification with Unisa.

“Sitting at home with nothing, positive and constructive to do can be depressing as it leaves one feeling like their life is not moving and that there is no progression , which is why even though I was studying I wanted to keep busy so that I will have something to do after graduating. I started hosting events and beauty pageants in my community in a quest to get children off the street and keep them busy as well as spark creativity in them to be innovators,” he explained.

Mahlogonolo is also a male model, pageant director, modelling coach and event organizer and says he has learned the importance of never giving up in life. His goal is to help those who cannot access or afford to go to school, to do so. “Each and every one of us has a talent, which I believe can be used to better their lives and the lives of those around them. I have learnt to be a giver, especially to those who are underprivileged and cannot afford some of the basic needs, and when I help where I can, it is always satisfying, ” he added.

Mahlogonolo gave the following self upliftment tips to ensure one leads a positive life:

1. Read a lot, either a book (novel, fiction or non fiction, biography), newspapers, magazines or journal articles.

2. Network. “This helps one build relations with other people as well as learn from them about how to make life a success.”

3. Volunteering: From experience Mahlogonolo says that volunteering has turned him into a valuable asset in his community, affording him an opportunity to grow his network and contacts with  people he can work with.
