Shisa Nyama recipe for the perfect braai on New Year’s Day

South Africa’s ‘buy-and-braai’ is the best way to waste a day during this holiday season.

A braai is the most South African way that friends and family come together, and we are fortunate enough that our holiday period is filled with warm weather and sun.
The best way to spend these summer days is with friends and a lekker Shisa Nyama. All you need is some good cuts of meat, spices, delicious sides and friends.
Shisa Nyama is a Zulu phrase that means to ‘burn meat’. Many people enjoy this type of braai and it is ideal for New Year’s.

All you need is:
Spice mix:

  • 10 ml (2 t) salt
  • 2.5 ml (½ t) chilli powder
  • 2.5 ml (½ t) ground cumin
  • 5 ml (1 t) black pepper
  • 5 ml (1 t) cayenne pepper
  • 5 ml (1 t) dried oreganum

Braai meat:

  • 4 x beef chuck chops, or similar
  • 4 x lamb braai chops, or similar
  • Chakalaka Mild & Spicy, warmed

To serve:

  • Pap & wors
  • Spicy pap bake
  • Roosterkoek

Method:
1. To make the spice mix, measure out all of the ingredients and mix well.
2. Generously season the braai meat with the spice.
3. Braai to liking and serve with Chakalaka Mild & Spicy and fresh baked bread or
suggested side dish

This totally simple recipe is a real crowd pleaser and will certainly elevate every braai that
you will most definitely be having this holiday season.
