Start the new year on a clean slate

Most of us want to start the new year on a fresh, clean note and sometimes our lives are more difficult to “spring clean”, so start with your house.

POLOKWANE – One can’t clean without the means to, so make sure you’re all stocked up on cleaning supplies.

Sponges, mops and all the solutions you think you may need.

Then make sure they’re ready and organized and not scattered around the house:

Keep them in a shelving unit in the laundry or in the kitchen or bathroom under the sink or on a trolley within easy reach. Stock up on some pretty smells for the house: New vanilla-scented candles, oils and wall filters will help to liven up your house. Refresh the space with some great fragrances to start off your cleaning adventure.

• Make a written checklist for each room

Ticking off your mental checklist of the cleaning areas and clutter to be removed will have you forget some to-do things for sure. Take a notebook and a pen, walk around each room and look for areas which need to be cleaned and organized. The list must be clear and go in detail about each cupboard and cabinet which needs cleaning. This will help you at the actual time of cleaning and allow you to organize your cleaning mission.

• Start by sorting everything in your home

All the items you don’t regularly use should go in a separate pile. If you haven’t worn it in 6 months, throw it away or donate it to a charity. If you have enough stuff you want to get rid of, what about organising a yard sale? It’s a quick way to get rid of clutter and empty up space in cupboards and cabinets.

• Rent a carpet cleaner and go to town

Get rid of the stains and give carpets a pristine, fresh look. Tiles and hardwood floors can be scrubbed and cleaned thoroughly. Look where a quick repaint or paint job can make a difference. Grab a can of paint and get to work.

• Clean your windows

It’s a quick rejuvenation and a great way to kick off spring cleaning.

• The ceiling fan and lights must also be included in your spring-cleaning agenda

The lights and fan are the dust-prone areas and usually go unattended during the daily or weekly cleaning process. Another area to attended to is curtains and blinds where there would be lots of dust. Wash the curtains or vacuum it.

Dispose of all the paperwork you no longer need and get all your holiday decorations packed and ready to store. Get rid of magazines stacked up

Grab the vacuum and clean all the upholstery

Polish or oil wooden surfaces. Clean leather upholstery with a quality conditioning leather cleaner.

• Cabinet hardware, drawer pulls and doorknobs don’t cost much to replace and if there are missing knobs, fix it

Take a long rest or a refreshing nap after cleaning up. You will have to do it again sometime. And yet again.
