6 ways to help your child cope with going to ‘big school’

Amanda Williams, Gr 4 teacher at Bet Shalom Christian School for some tips on how parents can help prepare their child for the big day.

POLOKWANE – The first day of school is fast approaching and so are the nerves, especially those of the children that are starting Gr R or Gr 1.

This will be a big change for them so Review asked Amanda Williams, Gr 4 teacher at Bet Shalom Christian School for some advice on how to prepare your child for the big day.

• Starting school maybe be easier if they are familiar with the school environment. Most schools have a induction day where they introduce all the children and parents to their class teachers and to a guided tour of the school .

• During the induction day introduce him to a few of their fellow school mates, this will make them more comfortable on the day when they recognise a few faces.

• Buy them some cool school stationary and/or school backpack that they can show off to their school mates during break time at school.

• Take your child to the salon a day or so before school starts to get a haircut. Let them be part of making the decision on the cut but remember to make sure the hairstyle is appropriate for school.

• On the first day of school remember to wake-up earlier than usual to prevent the hussle and bustle and an upset child on the first day. Get to school before the bell rings so they have a chance to interact with their fellow school mates.

• Pack a healthy but appetising meal and refreshments in their lunch box with maybe a few extra treats that they can share with their new friends.

“Remember to talk to your child about their fears and get them excited about going to school for the first time by telling them about the exciting activities they’ll be doing in class,” Amanda said.
