10 ways to stay cool without running up the electricity bill

At this time of year most people are only concerned with staying relaxed and cool. According to South African Weather Service temperatures are set to reach the mid to high 30's this week so why not beat the heat and save on electricity with the following 10 tips.

POLOKWANE – Tips on staying cool:

1. Don’t eat large, protein-rich meals that can increase metabolic heat and warm the body.

Eating foods that are high in protein can cause a person to feel warm, avoiding this on hot days will help you stay cool.

2. For a homemade “air conditioning” system, sit in the path of a box fan that is aimed at an open cooler, or pan filled with ice.

3. Eliminate extra sources of heat. Incandescent light bulbs can generate unnecessary heat, as can computers or appliances left running. Eat fresh foods that do not require you to use the oven or stove to prepare.

4. Watermelon popsicles: These healthy layered ice pops made with watermelon, kiwi and coconut water are just the thing to cool you down.

Use your favorite fruit like watermelon and turn them into a Popsicle to keep you cool and hydrated.

5. Aloe Vera and Lavender Skin-Soothing DIY: Even though you wear sunscreen, sun exposure can still irritate your skin. These ice balms are made of aloe vera, lavender essential oil and glycerin, so they’ll soothe your skin while they cool you down.

6. When it’s too sweltering to sleep comfortably, grab a hot water bottle and fill it with ice water. Place it under your ankles or knees to help cool your entire body

Fill a warm water bottle with cold or ice water to help you stay cool.

7. Store your lotion, face toner, aloe gels, perfume, moisturizer, and eye creams in the fridge. Keeping them chilled will not only cool you down when you apply them, it may also help extend the shelf life.

8. Get a sheet damp, then hang it over an open window. The hot air that passes through evaporates the water contained in the sheet, which creates a cooling air stream.

Hang a wet sheet i front of an open window to help cool down air.

9. To be adequately hydrated, you must drink plenty of water days before you’ll need it.Try to drink lots of water maybe three days before we’ll be working in the sun. Also, be sure to have water next to where you’re working. If water is near you, you’re more likely to drink it.
