Picnic snack ideas to entertain friends and family this summer holiday

What better way to celebrate the summer holidays by hosting a picnic outdoors with friends and family.

POLOKWANE – With the warmer weather there are plenty of  flowers in bloom so why not give your picnic a flowery theme by using the following tips for snacks.

Here are a few other things that you can try to get your party in the flower theme:

Flower bread snack:

Use a cookie cutter in the shape of a flower to cut out, cheese bread and some cold meat into flowers. Stack the cheese and cold meat flowers in different positions between two flower slices of bread and decorate with a cherry or onion according to our taste.

Flower shaped cookies:

You will need Cookie Press, Cookie Dough and Pink, Orange, and Yellow Food Coloring.

Use a recipe specifically designed for a cookie press. Cookie presses require a certain consistency dough that can be pushed through a stencil (or disc) and stick to the cookie sheet. Divide the dough into different bundles and then color the different bundles into different colors with your food dye.

Bake the cookies according to your recipe and when they have cooled down decorate them.

Bake colored flower biscuits and decorate them.

Potato rose snack:

Choose spuds that are about 5-6 cm across. Aim for 2-3 roses per person. Slice up the potatoes into thin slices that will be used to make the flowers. Stack potato slices in uneven layers (to resemble flower petals) in prepared muffin tin, ending with some of the smaller pieces.

Bake in preheated oven (200 C) until potatoes are tender, 45 to 60 minutes, testing with a metal skewer. Potatoes should be very soft. If potatoes look too brown but aren’t yet cooked through, cover pan with foil for the final minutes of baking.

Loosen edges of potato roses with a fork and lift out of pan to serving dish.

Here are some other decorations you can make for your flower party.

Make use of fresh garden flowers , a floral themed table cloth, napkins and dishes to complement the flowery snacks.
