Man (43) killed by overtaking car near Tweefontein

"I heard a loud hooting and by the time we turned to look what was happening behind us, it was too late as the car hit him and he flew onto the middle of the busy road. About two or three more cars drove over him as I struggled to stop traffic," the deceased's wife told BONUS.

POLOKWANE – Polokwane police are investigating a case of culpable homicide and reckless driving after an incident which claimed the life of a 43-year-old man. The deceased was hit by a vehicle that was overtaking another vehicle on the R71 in Tweefontein on Sunday, 4 November.

Joyce Maponya, wife of the deceased, spoke to BONUS.

“The statement report mentioned an accident in which two vehicles collided, and this is incorrect. That is not what happened.”

She added that as a result of the incorrect report, she and the rest of the family are questioning the contents of the report that was handed over by the police.

“My husband was hit by a speeding motorist who was overtaking on the busy road. I was accompanying my husband to the shops as he was going to buy some household essentials,” Joyce remembered.

She explained that she was walking on the gravel part of the road, while her husband was walking slightly on the tarred road, not extending beyond the yellow line as he was trying to avoid his bicycle, which he uses every day to work, from getting a tyre puncture.

“I heard a loud hooting and by the time we turned to look what was happening behind us, it was too late as the car hit him and he flew onto the middle of the busy road. About two or three more cars drove over him as I struggled to stop traffic, until a man stopped on the side of the road to help me,” she explained.

Joyce and the deceased’s family are concerned and requested an explanation regarding the incident report, which they say does not mention that the deceased was run over by a speeding vehicle which was overtaking on the road.

Instead, the report reads that two vehicles collided, and no explanation is given as to how the deceased ended up in the middle of the road. She says the police arrived at the scene, as well as the ambulance, and declared Matome Peter Maponya from Tzaneen dead. He worked as a security guard in Tweefontein and was laid to rest in Tzaneen, on Sunday, 11 November.

According to Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, investigations are ongoing and no arrests have been made yet.
