Izinyokas caught red-handed, arrested in Seshego

The arrested suspects are believed to be behind the recent theft of electrical components from mini-substation in the Seshego area.

POLOKWANE –  “Two of the suspects were found inside the mini-substation box whilst busy ripping out the components and were arrested on the spot. Those suspects then led the law enforcement to a place in Luthuli Park where five Mozambique nationals identified as buyers of the stolen materials, were also arrested,” said the Polokwane Municpality is a statement.

The arrested were affected by the police together with the municipality’s community safety services. During these arrests a measuring scale for aluminium and copper, tools used during the crimes and stolen electrical components were seized by the police.

There is a possibility of more arrests to follow, the municipality adds.

These arrests come after the recent rampant theft and vandalism of mini-substations in the Seshego area which has led to serious damage to the infrastructure resulting in residents and businesses being without electricity for longer periods.

“Nine mini-substations were stolen in the last three weeks which has cost the municipality over R1 million in repairs.

“Stealing and vandalism of electrical infrastructure including cable theft is a serious criminal offence. We appreciate the swift action by the law enforcement and electrical department for the arrest of the suspects.”

The municipality further urges the public to report incidents of theft or vandalism to the police.
