POLOKWANE – Police in Limpopo have condemned continuous acts of mob attacks and domestic related killings which remain prevalent in some parts of the province.

This follows an incident which occurred in the Seshego policing area, outside Polokwane, on Saturday 20 October.

Police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe says a 30-year-old man attacked and ‘chopped’ his wife and a one-year-old child with a sharp instrument in Seshego Zone 6 before fleeing the scene.

“The victims were taken to hospital for medical treatment by fellow residents but the woman died enroute and the child is still recuperating in hospital with serious injuries. Instead of calling the police, the community mobilized themselves and hunted down the suspect until they caught him and assaulted him, resulting in his death,” Ngoepe explained.

After being summoned to the scene, police began with their initial investigations and a manhunt for the people involved in the killing of this man ensued.

“The motive behind the attack on the woman and child is not clear at this stage, but domestic violence may not be ruled out. Two cases of murder and attempted murder were opened. The mob killing suspects are still unknown and no arrests have been made,” he said.

Ngoepe further advised communities to seek assistance from local authorities when they are facing domestic related problems, to avoid the re-occurrence of such incidents where women and children are victimized and killed.

“Communities must stop the tendency of taking the law into their own hands and those who are still participating in these irresponsible acts will be dealt with accordingly and without compromise.”

Anyone with information which can lead to the arrest of the mob killing suspects may contact Brigadier Lucas Hlako on 082 443 8907; the crime stop number 08600 10111 or the crime line SMS 32211.
