Vandalising property a criminal offence, says Muni

Review recently received complaints regarding the vandalising of municipal property including streets lights, road signs and drains.

POLOKWANE – Matshidiso Mothapo, Municipal Spokesperson, says it is essential for the community to take hands with the municipality.

“It is a setback having to replace or even fix damaged or vandalised municipal property. The infrastructure that is in place is there for the benefit of the community. Streets lights are there to provide light when it is dark outside and the street names are there to assist people navigate with ease in the community. It is important for people to know that vandalism is a criminal offence and anyone found in the act of vandalising municipal property in any way will be charged,” he explained.

He pleaded with the community to assist them in finding the culprits behind acts of vandalism by calling (015) 290 2457 or sending an e-mail electricalcomplain@polokwane.gov.za.

 

“The community needs to work with us so that we can find these perpetrators. By damaging property they also cause a massive inconvenience to the life of the community for instance cable theft as well as electrical box doors and the theft of manhole covers. This endangers the lives of passersby in these particular instances.”
