LIMPOPO – The no-nonsense approach by police in the province to thwart any criminal activity was manifested when armed suspects were apprehended in the wink of an eye after stealing more than R700 000 worth of emerald stones and other valuable items, says police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe.
The incident, which took place in the Gravelotte Emerald Mine outside Phalaborwa, occurred late on Wednesday afternoon, 19 September.
Four armed suspects gained access to the Mine Manager’s house and robbed everyone inside of emerald stones, cellphones, car keys and house keys, before fleeing the scene.
“Police were notified, reacted swiftly and a joint manhunt operation comprising of various police units, the Search and Rescue Team, supported by the The Farm Watch, the Community Police Forum and private helicopters, was immediately activated,” he added.
Three suspects between 25 and 33-years-old were arrested shortly after and the fourth suspect jumped into an old mine shaft to evade arrest. Ngoepe says the process of removing him is still taking place.
The following stolen goods were also recovered during the arrest :
– One 9mm pistol
– Four cellphones
– Three bags
– Emerald stones with the estimated value of R700 000
The suspects will appear before the Phalaborwa Magistrates Court soon.
Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has commended Saps members and all other role players who participated during this operation.
