Sports awards to honour Limpopo’s stars

POLOKWANE – During the launch of the awards on Tuesday, 11 September, MEC, Thandi Moraka, explained sport has a significant role to play in contributing to economic development in society and enhancing the employability of sport participants.

“Through sport activities, we are able keep the community, especially the youth, highly engaged and away from social ills such as criminality, alcohol and drug abuse as well as idle-mindedness. With this in mind, the sport awards recognises athletes drawn from various categories in the province. These categories identify individuals, either men or women, people who are differently abled, national and international participants, provincial federations, recreation bodies, schools, indigenous games, sport legends, media and community sport builders,” said Moraka.

She added nominations for the categories have been received and the sport federations have facilitated and concluded the nominations of potential winners of a total of 18 categories in line with the requirements of the rulebook of the Limpopo Academy of Sport.

She told Review she can’t disclose the prizes because the department wanted to maintain the surprise and thrill associated with the awards.
