Aspiring architect uses trash to change his life for the better

Erick Lekaba (29) from Greenside Ext 78 outside Polokwane builds double-storey houses using recycled material.

POLOKWANE –  He told CV he always dreamed of becoming an architect one day and he believes his creativity will lead him to success.

Lekaba said during his childhood, he always dreamed of owning a double-storey house and that was the motivation behind his talent.

“I believe this is a God-given talent and I’m proud of my art,” he said.

He added the high unemployment rate the country is facing is also the reason behind his success.

“I love my work, not only because it keeps me busy, but because I can generate an income from it.

“I depend on this business and it helps me put bread on the table for my family,” he said.

The talented Lekaba also draws wall paintings and plans for houses which need extentions.

He said he uses discarded cardboard boxes, plastic, paint and wire from factories’ dustbins to build his houses.

“I started all this in primary school and the response from my teachers motivated and encouraged me,” he said.

“My products attract many people and that grows my business and makes me positive.”

Lekaba said some days, he would wake up early in the morning and do some house sketches on paper before he could start with the building process.

“It takes me only two days to complete a house, however, it sometimes depends of the size of the house I’m building.”

He said he is willing to share his talent with other youths as this could help them stay away from crime.
