Moms spread the love with three months supply of sanitary pads

Women and mothers from the Polokwane Methodist Society donated sanitary towels to young girls from New Look Primary School in Greenside on Thursday, 16 August.

POLOKWANE – Each learner received a pack of sanitary towels which are set to last them three months until they receive a new pack from the caring mothers.

The girls sing hymns before the handover.

“We want to make this initiative a yearly event where we will be able to provide the young girls with crucial and basic hygiene essentials to last a whole year. We strongly believe a lack of these necessities will only result in the girls becoming demoralised, demotivated and discouraged to enjoy life to the fullest as well as work hard to prosper in their studies. No girl child should miss school because of something like having their period because it is part of nature and part of their growth,” explained one of the mothers, Phindile Khoza. Thangry Poopedi and Mosima Molepo, two nurses, joined the initiative and had a hygiene talk with the girls and taught them how to use the sanitary towels. They explained the nature of periods to the girls and urged them to not be ashamed or embarrassed when they see their periods.

“Periods are normal and they are bound to happen to each and every one of you just like they have happened to your mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts and friends, so please take extra care of yourselves when you are having your periods by keeping clean and hygienic at all times. Remember the seven Bs: books before boys because boys bring babies,” they said.

Representatives from the Polokwane Methodist Society: Phindile Khoza (Christian Community Secretary), Thangry Poopedi-Mokwena (Secretary of the Polokwane Methodist Society) and Lydia Masekoameng (New Look Primary School Principal).

The Principal, Lydia Masekoameng, thanked the women for their help and encouraged the community to lend a helping hand wherever they can to make life better for everyone.

The women plead for more donations from both private and government spheres to assist them with collecting more sanitary towels to donate to young girls who cannot afford them in their bid to keep young girls in school.
