12 Firearms and ammunition seized during sting operation in Solomondale

Investigations into the origin of these firearms and whether they were previously used in the commission of other crimes are still unfolding.

POLOKWANE – Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has commended police involved in the recovery of twelve firearms and ammunition as well as the arrest of two suspects on Thursday night, 2 August.

Police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe says a well coordinated, intelligence driven operation was established following the receipt of information of the existence of firearms in Solomondale near Mankweng, outside Polokwane.

“This sting operation, which comprised of members from crime intelligence, the Mankweng cluster task team and detectives, yielded instant results when the duo were nabbed,” he said.

The following firearms and ammunition recovered:

– One Star 9mm pistol.
– Three Norinco pistols.
– Five Star pistols.
– One Arcus pistol.
– One Rossi revolver.
– One Girsan pistol.
– 15, 9mm live rounds of amunition.

Investigations into the origin of these firearms and whether they were previously used in the commission of other crimes are still unfolding.

“The removal of these firearms from the wrong hands will go a long way in ridding this province of serious and violent crimes,” General Ledwaba concluded.

The suspects, aged 22 and 25-years-old, will appear in the Mankweng Magistrate’s court on Monday, 6 August, on charges of unlawful possession of arms and ammunition.
