Keeping the winter chills at bay

Hoëerskool Westenburg Secondary learners, educators and staff from Jumbo Cash and Carry in Nirvana banded together to help make the cold winter a little less harsh for the gogos in Westenburg.

POLOKWANE – “The elderly residents are not as strong anymore so they feel colder faster. They are also the ones who look after the youngsters while their parents are at work which is why we decided to look after them with this blanket donation.

“We wanted to make their job and responsibilities easier by donating these warm and beautiful hand-knit blankets. As part of my responsibilities in the Mrs Africa Classic beauty pageant, I have to give back to the community and I chose the elderly residents of Westenburg as the beneficiaries. These acts of kindness will help me prepare to give back to all South Africans if I win the pageant,” said Martha Chuene-Masopoga (teacher at Hoërskool Westenburg Secondary).

Chuene-Masopoga urged the learners at her school to each knit a blanket to donate as well as went door to door to ask businesses to join this initiative.

The blankets were handed over in Westenburg on Thursday, 26 July by Chuene-Masopoga who identified gogos in the community.

She thanked Alma Zerf and Mbhambo Trading projects for their support and help and she urged the community to always lend a helping hand where they can.

“I greatly thank my sponsors, Jumbo Cash and Carry, particularly Alma Zerf who coordinated the staff to ensure this project was completed with success, may God bless them,” she added.

Zerf in response said it was an honour to help those in need. “Communities build one another up,” she said.
