Mantlako Sebaka, Manager Transport Marketing, Communicator and Stakeholder Relations, explained the development falls under the Leeto la Polokwane initiative, an integrated public transport system.
“It provides the people of Polokwane with safer, faster, affordable, efficient and environmentally friendly public transport services. It is intended to transform the public transport sector through the provision of a high-quality transport system in line with national policy,” he explained, adding the construction taking place opposite Goseame Open Market is part of preparations for the systems to begin with operations.
The contractor has been on site from the beginning of July 2018 and the construction of a bus layover facility is set to start shortly. It is expected to take place over a six-month period.
The facility will be used by the buses during off peak period.
“The projections are that it will take about six months to complete, considering the same contractor has been appointed to construct a bus station in General Joubert Street in the Central Business District. All infrastructure related projects of this nature have an element of Expanded Public Works Programme within the Polokwane Municipality,” he concluded.
