Madala dreams big with mkhukhu

Dreaming all his life of one day living in a big two-storey house, madala Ebert Muthubi's mkhukhu brings him great joy.

POLOKWANE – Even though his dreams didn’t exactly come about as planned, his determination to reach them sees him living in his own attractive five-roomed double-storey mkhukhu today.

The madals’s eye-catching mkhukhu consists of three bedrooms, a kitchen and a spacious living area.

The 60-year-old from Greenside Extension 78 outside Polokwane enjoys watching every corner of his kasi streets from his mkhukhu’s top floor during his spare time.

He told CV that he sleeps peacefully in his upstairs room as he feels safe all the time.

“My home is different from others and it brings joy to me every time I see my mkhukhu,” said Muthubi, adding he has become a sort of celebrity among his kasi residents as many of them admire his ‘mansion’.

“At first people thought I was mad when I started building my mkhukhu but I’m happy that all my plans went well.”

He added his mkhukhu might be cheap but it is eye-catching and adorable.

“This is a gift from God and I believe He is still going to shower me with more.”

Madala Ebert Muthubi’s determination helped him build his double-storey, eye-catching mkhukhu.

He explained he was a brick layer and worked for several building companies in Polokwane for 20 years which is where he got the experience to build his sturdy mkhukhu. “Because I built several flats buildings in Polokwane, I then used the experience to build my mansion. This is my special mkhukhu and I don’t owe a cent on it.”

Muthubi said his mkhukhu is made of materials he collected from dumping sites which added to the cost-effectiveness. “Many children around my place regularly visit me because they enjoy relaxing upstairs with a bird’s eye view.

“I can even watch soccer games from the nearby sports grounds and that makes me feel like I’m at the stadium,” he smiled.
