Gymnastics is a ‘must’ for the elderly, says Russian trainer

Monika Shišková is in Polokwane for the week long FIG course, hosted by Zanis

POLOKWANE – When it comes to staying in shape and staying fit, many of the older generation from the age of 50-years-old and up, never think of making use of gymnastics. This is something that Monika Shišková is a big advocate for, especially for women, to take up in their senior years.

“A lot of enthusiasts head to the gym, but explosive training combined with aggressive music is no longer necessary for older people,” she says.

Monika says many are afraid of gymnastics because they think it’s about stands, blades, or preforms.

“Gymnastics in the 50 plus category is mainly associated with music, dance and a nice body holding. It’s a nice exercise that moves all the muscles of the body. Gymnastics classes are mainly dance. It is a suitable sport for the youngest of children, as well as for seniors.”

Monika Shišková shows some basic movements people of all ages can use during Gymnastics training.

She encourages people to get involved in local clubs and see what programs are available for them.

Monika just finished a week long FIG course in Polokwane where she worked with people from all ages. It is her second time coming to the country and she told Review that her love for the country is growing.

“I love seeing the people, the different cultures and the people who share my passion with me. I love this place so much that I believe I must have been born here in another life,” she explains.
