Motorists warned to avoid the R81 near Mooketsi as protests flair up again

The unrest in the area is due to unresolved Sekgopo chieftaincy problems

POLOKWANE – According to the spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala, the situation at Sekgopo has turned tense, but police are in the area monitoring the situation.

“Reports suggests that residents are in the bushes and throw stones to any moving vehicle that they see. To make matters worse, they relax and allow motorists to pass for few hours and thereafter start to smash passing vehicles,” he explained.

Moremi-Taueatsoala says motorists should use the Magoebaskloof route as an alternative.

The Premier of Limpopo, Chupu Mathabatha, will today, meet with Sekgopo community leaders and the Sekgopo Royal Family, separately in closed meetings.

“These two separate meetings will at the end solve the many days of protests and strife that saw services halting at Ga Sekgopo,” spokesperson for the Premier, Kenny Mathiva, concluded.
