Mogalakwena Mayor gets her hands dirty

Matsemela took to the streets and different sites to identify problem areas and was accompanied by Bosveld, Exco members, councillors, managers and officials from the municipality.

MOKOPANE – The Mayor of Mogalakwena, Andrina Matsemela, visited various areas in and around Mokopane last Thursday following the community outcry about the lack of service delivery in town during her Integrated Developmental Plan (IDP) Budget Mayoral roadshows.

Matsemela took to the streets and different sites to identify problem areas and was accompanied by Bosveld, Exco members, councillors, managers and officials from the municipality.

Her first inspection was the Mokopane cemetery to attend to some of the issues that were raised during the roadshows, and also attend to the challenges that were raised by the municipal employees who are working at the graveyard.

David Langa, (Mogalakwena Municipality Councillor) and Andrina Matsemela, (Mayor of Mogalakwena Municipality) addresses the media.

“Problems identified by the officials working at the graveyard are: The TLB they use for digging graves has not been working for almost three years, a shortage of working equipment, the environment is not conducive and their is no fencing. I promised that if it comes to the push, the councillors and I will patch potholes and clean the graveyard.”

Gerhard Meyer, Divisional Head of Parks and Recreation said: “We have about 50 m space available that we can use for a period of more than 12 years as we are finalising the processes of the regional cemetery that we mentioned during our IDP roadshows. The regional cemetery will cover all the communities of Mogalakwena.”

Matsemela also visited the dumping site. She said the issues at the dumping site range from provision of recycling machines, restrooms for the workers and shortage of staff.

“The landfill sometimes catches fire because of paints that are being disposed of at the site and a weigh bridge that is not yet operating.”

Other areas identified by Matsemela are the Mokopane wrestling club and Mokopane sportsground that need serious maintenance and upgrading.

“In extension 12 there is vacant land which has not been occupied by people who purchased that land.”

She emphasised the land beneficiaries will be contacted because there is a policy that compels them that when they buy land it must be occupied within three years.

Matsemela finally visited extension 14, 19 and 20 where the main issue is illegal dumping. Matsemela indicated the municipality has to come up with a programme to educate residents about this issue.

“It is our responsibility to ensure municipal officials have the sufficient tools of trade the that complements their line of duty.”
