The Cosafa Cup is currently taking place in Polokwane and 14 nations are taking part.

POLOKWANE – South Africa covers 1,214,470 square kilometers of land and is located on the southern tip of the African continent, where it is bordered by Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It encompasses the independent mountain kingdoms of Lesotho and Swaziland and is flanked by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and the warm Indian Ocean on the east.

There are 11 official languages spoken in South Africa namely, Afrikaans, English, IsiNdebele, Northern Sotho, SeSotho, SiSwati, XiTsonga, SeTswana, TshiVenda, IsiXhosa and IsiZulu.

We can arguably say that South African’s are known for their braai skills, which on other mundane parts of the world is called grilling.

In South Africa, a braai is completed by pap (a thick porridge), which is one of the country’ s staple foods. In all cultures within the South African rainbow nation, braaing is a common unifier. Amarula is a cream liquor that was originally founded in South Africa in 1989. It has since grown tremendously and today its great taste is enjoyed in over 100 countries worldwide.

Five facts about South Africa:

1. South Africa is now the only country in the world to have hosted the Soccer, Cricket and Rugby World Cup.

2. South Africa is home to the highest commercial bungee jump in the world at 710 feet.

3. The oldest remains of modern humans were found in South Africa and are well over 160,000 years old.

4. South Africa is the only country in the world that has two Noble Prize winners who lived on the same street (Both Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu had houses on Vilakazi Street in Soweto).

5. The famous Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s largest game reserve with 19,635 square kilometers, it is almost as big as the country, Belgium.

And a bonus fun fact is that Table mountain has over 1500 species of plants, which is more flower species than Ireland, Wales, Britain and Scotland combined.
