Fitness instructor, Mpho, aims for greatness

Growing up, Mpho Motshoane, currently living in Polokwane, says he struggled to pursue and follow his passion of being a fitness trainer as they had limited fitness training facilities in Lenyenye, Tzaneen where he grew up.

POLOKWANE – “Although I had a passion and love for fitness and training as well as keeping fit in general, I struggled to find a gym close to my home where I could train or work out. From a young age I’ve always been a sports fanatic and I always wanted to pursue a career in soccer or athletics after matric. This, however, was difficult for my parents to accept as the more ‘normal’ careers to follow revolve around engineering and sciences,” he said, adding he first developed an interest in gym while in high school.

“I was inspired by my friend who played rugby as I also wanted a buff physique like them. Since I have always had a slim build, I began training. I studied towards a qualification in IT and thereafter I went on to study health and fitness in the form of personal trainer at the TriFocus Fitness Academy.”

The 25-year-old has worked at two well-known and established gyms in Polokwane where he says he was able to expand and share his knowledge around fitness and health with the community.

“I was also able to learn a lot from my colleagues in the fitness and training industry to expand my knowledge. I am also a fitness and gym instructor at Capricorn High School where I help the children train and prepare for league matches, teaching them about overall fitness and good health,” he added.

He deems his grandmother as his biggest supporter as she would “always push me to do my best in everything I do, especially at my workplace”.

“She encourages me to always have faith and be close to God. My dream is to make her proud until the last day as well as become one of the most well-known fitness instructors in the province, and hopefully the entire country, one day.”

Mpho added as a fitness instructor, one must ensure they are healthy and fit. “As a fitness instructor or personal trainer you have to look good yourself and take care of your body because your clients look up to you.”

He explained, as an individual, one must strive to achieve goals set regarding fitness and health as these goals will ensure longevity and a healthy lifestyle. “People need to just be themselves and and know what they want regarding their fitness goals. That way you won’t put too much pressure on yourself, expecting too much or doing the wrong things. Eat the right food and train smart; even if the results take time, just keep pushing until you see those small results. My motto is to strive for greatness, not perfection,” he said.
