False armed robbery leads to the arrest of three suspects near Groblesdal

Three suspects were arrested on charges of perjury, which led to the arrest of five other suspects believed to be involved in a false robbery.

LIMPOPO – Police in Limpopo are condemning residents reporting false cases to the police in the strongest possible terms.

According to police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the police’s condemnation emanates from an incident in which three suspects, between the ages of 20 and 41-years-old, were arrested for perjury after a false armed robberry was reported to the police in Rakgoadi, outside Groblersdal.

“A passerby phoned the police informing them that he saw a bakery truck on the side of the road with its driver and his crew tied up with ropes. Police reacted swiftly and untied the two victims and initial police investigations ensued. It was then uncovered that there was no armed robbery,” he explained.

Ngoepe says police are investigating the possibility that this might have been a planned fake robbery which would have resulted in the suspects getting the money that they earlier collected.

“Further police investigations have revealed that there are five other suspects involved in this matter and three of them have been traced and arrested in Tafelkop and Lucau, respectively. Another portion of the money which was falsely robbed during this incident was recovered from these arrested suspects,” Ngoepe added.

The remaining two suspects, who are known, are still on the run and the manhunt is still continuing.

The suspects will appear before the Groblersdal Magistrate Court, soon.

“This misuse of state resources by these unscrupulous individuals must stop abruptly otherwise the long arm of the law is going to deal with them mercilessly and without compromise,” he concluded.
