Mother accused of severely beating her 5-year-old son remanded in custody

The mother of the child allegedly used a wooden stick to beat him

LIMPOPO – The 35-year-old woman arrested for the alleged brutal assault of her 5-year-old son, appeared before the Matala Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody.

the accused appeared today on charges of child abuse and assault with grievous bodily harm (GBH) and is set to reappear on 12 April 2018, said Police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

On 15 March the accused allegedly severely assaulted her son using a wooden stick after accusing him of losing his school shoes. During this ordeal, the child sustained serious injuries throughout his body and had to be taken to the hospital for medical treatment. The child is in a place of safety.

Police investigations still continue, he concludes.

LIMPOPO – The Provincial Police Commissioner Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba has strongly condemned any form of child abuse following the recent brutal assault of a five-year-old boy by his mother.

It is alleged that on 15 March the 35-year-old woman from Cooperspark village in Matlala Policing precinct outside Polokwane, severely assaulted her son using a wooden stick after accusing him of losing his school shoes, said Police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe. “During this ordeal, the victim sustained serious injuries through out his body and had to be taken to the hospital for medical treatment.”

She has since been arrested and has appeared before the Matlala Magistrate’s Court on a charge of child abuse and assault GBH. She was remanded in custody until 29 March 2018 for formal bail application and to allow for further police investigations, he added.

The child is currently placed in a place of safety, Confirmed Ngoepe.

Police investigations are still continuing.
