[WATCH] Building young scientists brick by brick

Junior Engineers for Africa (JEFA) visited Mitchell House College and got the learners excited about science and engineering.

POLOKWANE – They accomplished this by getting the learners involved with building a winch with Lego pieces, only one of several things they have built, and are building, with Lego pieces.

Review took a quick tour to see the progress the learners were making….

One of the workshop facilitators and office assistant, Mimita Mabuza, explains on camera that the activities benefit the children’s mental development.

“This workshop teaches the learners more about engineering and life principles. it encourages them to utilise their minds and hands to learn,” she said.

She added through building models with Lego pieces, learners naturally use their curiosity and instinct to explore, experiment, observe and play. “They are constantly exploring the world around them, testing and experimenting and thinking like young scientists. What happens with the Lego bricks, the paper or the leaves? Will they float or sink? Or what happens if I roll the car down the ramp? What if I use a ball instead? How can I make a chain reaction? These types of thinking and skills lay the foundation for the development of children’s science, technology, engineering, arts and math skills,” she explained.
