Indigenous languages celebrated at Nirvana Primary

As part of the Incremental and Introduction to African Languages (IIAL) programme learners at Nirvana Primary School recently held an indigenous language concert to depict their knowledge in their mother tongue as well as in a number of other languages.

POLOKWANE – The IIAL programme as implemented by the Department of Education in various schools in the province is aimed at facilitating social cohesion to ensure social integration and inclusion in communities and societies at large.

Nirvana Primary School’s Gr 5 learners, Rivalane Mathebula,Kgala Sebetseba, Matome Malatjie, Lesedi Mokgokone, Khomotso Maila, Onkabetse Komane and Lethabo Phalane.

It is a strategy aimed at introducing previously marginalised official languages in all the schools which are currently not offering any of these.

PicknPay Nirvana representatives Gladys Maredi, Matapa Boshigo and Oniccah Mogathi.

“The main idea behind the concert is to show the parents that their children are learning to speak other languages other than their mother tongue, so today they will be acting out plays, reciting poems and idioms in other languages that are spoken in the school such as Venda, Xitsonga, Swati, Hindi, Sepedi and of course English,” Nirvana Primary School Principal Thokozane Mhlongo explained.
