Marakele firefighters empower UNISA students

Working on Fire (WOF) Limpopo’s Marakele team had the honour to be visited by students from UNISA in Polokwane, who wanted to learn more about integrated fire management systems.

POLOKWANE – Wildfires affect everyone across the country. As part of their plan to reduce wildfires, Working on Fire (WOF) Limpopo embarked on various campaigns with the objective of reducing them.
Unisa’s conservation students visited the Marakele National Park to learn more about nature and conservation. As part of their tour, they also attended a workshop conducted by WOF Marakele firefighters in the city where they learned about fire behaviour, fire suppression and personal fire safety.

“The level of discipline showed by the students was remarkable,” Spokesperson for WOF, Matema Gwangwa told Review.
She added that part of the training included fire suppression practicals where the students were physically suppressing live fire.
“They were also taught about the type of clothing or attire to wear when going to the fire line as well as the different types of tools used in fire fighting. We hope that the skills and information that the students got here they will share it with their families and their peers,” Matema said.
