Peddling from Polokwane to Lenasia for education

In a bid to raise funds for learners struggling to pay their tertiary education fees, a group of South African cyclists from Gauteng will be taking part in the #Riding4SAeducation 1 160 km cycle challenge.

POLOKWANE – “By empowering and educating our children in their early and vulnerable years of life, we can together leave a lasting and sustainable contribution to the development of South Africa,” Salaam Foundation’s Azhar Vadi explained.

The event, organised by Salaam Media and the Salaam Foundation based in Johannesburg, is being supported by cyclists from the Africa Muslims Agency, Nyota Collections (Atteridgeville), Al Ihya Foundation (Ennerdale) and the Islamic Relief South Africa.

The proceeds of this cycle challenge will be donated to each of these organisations, to be used in their respective educational programmes across the country.

According to a study conducted by the Children’s Institute at the University of Cape Town and the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation in the Presidency, 63% of young South African children live in poverty. This roughly translates into 3 969 000 children currently living in dire circumstances.

In previous years, the inaugural #Riding4SAeducation campaign resulted in approximately 1 000 pairs of school shoes, 2 500 stationery packs, school uniforms, hundreds of reusable sanitary pads, school kitchen appliances and a computer lab.

The cycling challenge will start on Monday, 12 February in Polokwane and will come to an end on Sunday, 25 February in Lenasia. The cyclists will make their way through these towns on the set dates:
