The importance of tyre maintenance
In light of the welcomed rain that recently covered the city of stars, motorists are warned that the maintenance of tyres are of utmost importance and need to be kept in mind before one gets into a vehicle.
POLOKWANE – According to Hennie Fourie from Tiger Wheel and Tyre Polokwane, when inspecting tyres, one needs to make sure not to just check the outer part of the tyre but ensure that the inner shoulder of the tyre is in top shape.
This is where most of the tyres get worn-out first and is the least visible.
Here are some important facts to remember about tyres:
- According to law within South Africa, a minimum of 1.6 mm tread is acquired.
- Tyres don’t have a “tread wear indicator” for easy reference and a free inspection can be done at any tyre institution.
- However, when the tread blocks are level with the tyre itself, that is a major cause for concern and indicative that it is time to replace the tyres.
- Tyre pressures is just as important, and according to Fourie one always needs to take heed in this matter. “Tyres should be inspected when they are cold, for instance first thing in the morning, and probably at least once a month. The other alternative is to just simple stop at your tyre dealer who will gladly do an inspection on your tyres.”
- Pothole or impact damage is normally visible due to a “bubble” on the sidewall of a tyre. When a tyre is driven with a bubble, the heat build-up inside could result in a blowout.
- Wheel Alignment should be done every 8000 – 10000km, or once a year, at the same time it would be best to do a rotation and balancing of your tyres.
- Make sure that your Wheel Alignment is done when fitting tyres, there after you need to do a rotation, balancing and wheel alignment every 8000-10000km or once a year, this will make your tyres last longer and give you more even wear.
- Checking your tyre pressures regularly will also assist with your fuel consumption.
