Police make major breakthrough with recovery of firearms stolen from security company

A 22-year-old suspect has been arrested and 15 of the 18 firearms reportedly stolen during a business robbery at the premises of a security company in the Tswinga area recovered, confirmed the police on Friday.

 

LIMPOPO – According to Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, this major breakthrough was made on Thurshay night after police followed up on a tip-of from local residents about the whereabouts of the suspect. After the arrest further investigations led the police to a house at Tswinda village where the firearms were found hidden in a shallow grave.

15 firearms (all pistols),  seven firearm magazines and seven  live rounds of ammunition were recovered, Mojapelo added.

“The recovery of these firearms brings to 16 the total number of firearms recovered since they were reported stolen on Friday, 22 December 2017. Two firearms are still outstanding.”

All recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic examination to check if they were used in the commission of crime. The arrested suspect will appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrates Court on Monday 22 January 2018, concluded Mojapelo.

The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has applauded the cooperation between the police and the community that was manifested during the entire investigation and subsequent success. “This cooperation made sure that these firearms are removed from the hands of the criminals”, concluded General Ledwaba.
