Green light for Mokopane traffic department – Maritz

“This is once again proof that when everyone take hands and work together, everything is possible. I want to thank all the parties who worked together and changed something that could have been a catastrophe for the residents of Mokopane.”

MOKOPANE – The Limpopo Festive Road Safety Campaign was launched on Tuesday and it was revealed that the Mokopane Traffic Department doesn’t have any approved overtime for the festive season.
Marcelle Maritz, Limpopo Leader of Freedom Front Plus told Bosveld that while the road safety campaign was launched by Minister of Transport,  Joe Maswanganyi, she heard with shock that the traffic department has no available overtime for the festival season.
Maritz says that it was a big concern and the impact it will have on the community is astronomical.
“There will be no traffic assistance after hours for Mokopane residents. In case of a serious accident where traffic needs to be regulated there will be no traffic staff to provide assistance,” Maritz says.
Maritz felt she had to intervene.
“I immediately arranged a meeting with Acting Municipal Manger, Andile Mashele, Acting Manager of Traffic, Magda Berrange and Head of Traffic Division, Log Buitendag.
We all agreed that it is unacceptable to enter a festive season without overtime for traffic officials.”
Maritz says that she can confirm with a sigh of relief that the necessary documentation for the traffic department’s overtime this festival season has been done and approved within a day.
“This is once again proof that when everyone take hands and work together, everything is possible.
“I want to thank all the parties who worked together and changed something that could have been a catastrophe for the residents of Mokopane.”
Maswanganyi, said in his speech:
“The high number of road fatalities and injuries during the festive season and all-year round remains a major concern for government.
Young people between the ages of 20 and 34 constitute the majority of people who die on South African roads.”
During the festive season there will be special focus on obeying all the rules of the road and alcohol abuse and drunken driving in particular.
“According to Maswanganyi mobile testing stations will be placed at strategic points to test the road worthiness of vehicles and drivers will also be tested for alcohol levels.
