Newly built home handed over to victim of Westenburg house fire

Johanna Moremela, whose house was damaged during a fire in May this year, was recently blessed with a newly-built house and other essentials.

POLOKWANE –  The newly-built house, sponsored by SAWiC ( South African Women in Construction), was handed over to the family on 24 November 2017, together with  basic house essentials such as food and clothes and blankets from the Department of Public Works.

Mashimpye Stuurman, Head of Local Economic Desk and Finance and also the secretary of the ward 19 committee, explains: “Johanna Moremela had an unfortunate case in May this year whereby her house burned down and she lost all her belongings. We did our part by sponsoring her with basic household essentials such as a tent (as she was still waiting for her house to get fully built) blankets, clothes and food. SAWiC came on board and helped to rebuild her house. Solly Electrical also came on board and donated the materials to electrify her entire house. Thanks to hands that work together, today Moremela has a roof over her head.”

Disebo Bopape from SAWiC said that they always try their level best to help out where they can and they are glad they could help the Moremane family to restore their dignity.

Johanna Moremela recalls the fateful evening of the fire:

“When I woke up in the early hours of the morning I wanted to take a bath. I smelled smoke and called out to my son when I noticed one of the bedrooms was on fire and the door to that room was already falling. We struggled to put the fire out and our neighbours came to help us but the fire had already done too much damage. We had lost our home and most of our furniture.

“We asked for help several times and although it took time for us to get assistance I am grateful for this act of kindness. I thank the Polokwane Municipality, SAWiC, and all the other people who helped for sponsoring us with a new home,” she said.
