Suspect sentenced to life imprisonment for murder of cop

The police captain was shot dead during an incident in June 2014

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane High Court yesterday (Thursday) sentenced Nicolus Moseamedi (21) to life imprisonment for the murder of a police officer in 2014.

Hawks Spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke reports: “Captain Shikati (54) and Constable Machabe, who were stationed at Ritavi Police Station, received a complaint about a person who had allegedly sustained serious injuries during an assault at Petanenge village on 29 June 2014.”

“On arrival at the alleged crime scene, three men confronted the officers, shot and killed Capt Shikati and took his service pistol together with the one belonging Constable Machabe and fled the scene.”

After lengthy investigations by Hawks’ Seroius Organised Crime Unit, three suspects including Nicolus Moseamedi were arrested and the stolen service pistols recovered.

All three accused appeared before the Polokwane High Court on 22 November 2017, two were acquitted and Moseamedi was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for murder (count 2), 15 years for robbery under aggravating circumstance (count 3), 8 years for unlawful possession of firearms (count 8), 5 years for unlawful possession of ammunition (count 9).
