EQ and why it’s crucial to develop for success

Emotional intelligence is an age-old concept that is more and more in the limelight these days.

POLOKWANE – Review spoke to Willie Trytsman, a registered counsellor (B.Psych) at EQ4kids, about this new buzz word.

“EQ, or emotional intelligence, is the emotional counterpart of rational intelligence, more commonly known as IQ. Intelligence refers to the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills or the collection of information. Therefore we can state EQ refers to the ability to acquire and apply emotional knowledge and skills. EQ is thus the individual’s ability to be aware of and use his own emotions in communication with himself and others and to manage and motivate himself and others.”

According to Trytsman, various researchers have dabbled in the domain of emotional intelligence and have made astonishing discoveries. The most astounding discovery is that IQ may only predict between one and 20% of the success an individual may achieve whereas EQ may predict anything from 25 to 45% of the success an individual may achieve.

“These findings support further research which discovered that as much as 90% of all top-achievers have a higher EQ than others. Those with a well-developed EQ have also been found to be assertive, sociable, enthusiastic, stable, committed, detailed, neat, systematic and with integrity. An individual with a well-developed EQ is also able to adapt well to change, is not confined by situations but rather overcome the odds. They lead more happy and fulfilled lives, are healthier than others and they are more likely to make a success of their endeavours.”

Trytsman explained that from the above it is clear a well-developed EQ contributes significantly to the functioning, development and success of any individual. “It is also evident that IQ and EQ work together to determine the degree of success an individual may achieve in their life. Therefore there is no doubt that anyone, no matter how young or old, will benefit greatly by investing in EQ development programmes. Improve your success in life and ensure the life success of your child today by incorporating EQ development in your daily routine,” he said.
